WELCOME TO PIXEL TURF!

Welcome to the UNOFFICIAL PIXEL TURF page! There is NO OFFICIAL PIXEL TURF page, but this is the one created by WHYSTLER, who incidentally came up with the idea, but that doesn't mean anything! :D .

What's a Pixel Turf?

It's a 2D environment you can explore with a 2D character/avatar. These turfs are often linked to others, which makes snooping around fun and intriguing. You never know what you might stumble across in some hidden corner of the internet. Anyone can create their own Pixel Turf by copying the appopriate code to their website and changing the images to make their space unique!

Pixel Turfs always give you the ability to choose your own avatar, and that avatar will carry through to other turfs during your exploration session.

Let's Get Started!

Alright!

1. First click on your chosen avatar or specify an avatar url:

But wait! I have more Questions!

What's an Avatar?

It's the body you wear while walking around a turf. These bodies are stored in different web directories around the internet. To change your avatar, you just have to specify the url of the web directory where it is stored.

It would be smart to keep a file of your favourite avatar urls, so that you'll be able to copy/paste one you like into the avatar field of the turf where you start exploring.

During your Pixel Turf exploration session, your avatar will likely carry over to other turfs when you pass through teleports.

What's a Teleport?

It's like any link that you would normally click on when you are visiting a website, except in this case, it is activated when your character bumps into something in the turf that will teleport you to a new one.

What can I do in Pixel Turfs?

You can see awesome and interesting art environments that people have built. Maybe there will be pixel scuptures! Maybe there will be mazes! Maybe they will have hidden puzzles! Maybe they will gamified by people who change the code! Maybe they will excite you with energetic views!! Or relax you with tranquil scenes...

It really all depends on the creativity of the person who sets up the turf, and their artistic and coding abilities.

At the very least, you'll be able to explore, which is the main aim of Pixel Turfs. Think of it as a warren of rooms you can wander through to discover what people are communcating, in various ways, just below the surface of the internet!

Where can I find Avatars to wear?

Here is a good place to start: XXX

Keep in mind that all you need to do is copy/paste the avatar directory into the appropriate field, which should be available on any Pixel Turf, and your avatar should change and continue with you to other turfs that you visit from its teleports.

Can I make my own Avatar?

To make an avatar, you will want to get a website (like one on neocities), create a directory called /character , and then add 8 animated gif images to that directory (named appopriately) so that something appears on screen when you use the cursor keys. There is one gif each for: facing upwards, walking upwards, facing down, walking down, facing left, walking left, facing right, walking right.

Can I set up my own Pixel Turf?

Of course! Pixel Turfs are meant to be explored AND made.

The bare bones of making a turf involves the following things: getting a website (like one on neocities), copy/pasting code to that website, adding images that represent: the background collision map, the visual terrain, and teleport spots.
